OK, I have to admit it: I’d never seen handmade jewelry made of porcupine quills before I found Kevin Varanai’s VARA NAI collection. Dipped in vibrant colors, these necklaces & earrings are just gorgeous.

1. What inspired you to began your collection?
I was at a thrift store and I saw this headdress made with porqupine quills and feathers and thought it was the most beautiful thing. Not all people can just pull off a headdress on a day-to-day basis, so I thought, “Wouldn’t these make beautiful jewelry?”
2. Can you name a favorite source of inspiration?
Nature would have to be my biggest inspiration. It’s something everyone can appreciate in their own way. I also love to create jewelry where someone can wear a piece of nature, whether dyed a bright color uncommon in nature or left in it’s natural form.
3. What materials do you love to use?
I have always been attached to feathers and porcupine quills. I have experimented with some other materials, but I always seem to go back to feathers and quills.
4. Do you have a dream collaborator?
I have never truly thought about this before. I guess I never focused on collaborating with anyone, so not anyone in particular. However, I do love working with others and combining ideas. So really anyone with similar interests/products.
5. When you need a musical muse, who do you turn the volume up for?
I really enjoy slow and serene music when working. Lately, I have been listening to Lana Del Rey while I work. Her voice has such emotion and she really seems to motivate me. My whole new collection was developed while listening to her music.
6. How do you use social media/blogging to promote your work?
I do have a Facebook page for VARA NAI, however I don’t post a whole lot of unnecessary information. Only when there is a sale or special announcement. I don’t want to pressure my products on anyone, just inform them on important happenings.
7. Where do you see your shop/project going?
I don’t really know, I’m so blessed to have the success that I have been having lately. VARA NAI was just a hobby, but has turned into a part-time job and I just love it! I just hope to grow as a company, gain new followers, and provide beautiful handcrafted jewelry to all!
