See / Wear Featuring Handmade from SOLLIS and Yumalum

Need a punch of color in your world? Try these handmade finds from two of my favorite artists: Sollis and Yumalum.

Sollis: Eleanor Ford’s dynamic collection incorporates marble, glass and gold-plated beads to create these vibrant baubles. You can see the Indian influence in her latest collection, aptly title Dahlia. There is no mistaking her gift for design and mastery of color.

Yumalum: There are imitators out there (one subpar and, unfortunately, popular one comes to mind) but there is only one Yumalum. Mark Griffiths (also the mastermind behind obsessilicious) has a knack for vintage style. He meticulously prints his fab posters on quality heavyweight 230gsm matte paper on an Epson 7890 printer using Epson Ultrachrome K3 ink, ensuring a long, long life. I will simply say that anything printed on lesser paper and machinery just isn’t as good, no matter how many copies they sell. Yumalum is handz down the best. That’s called #designrespect, ya’ll. Originality pays off in the end. OK, I’m off the soapbox. Enjoy the combos.

    Love it! Thanks

Yumalum is the copycat no matter how hard you try to deny it, he copied style and ideas from ORIGINAL creator of Cathrineholm and Stig Lindberg prints, start to use same fonts, color schemes and other significant aspects of the original. It is very easy to find the blog posts about Handz´s prints from the time when Yumalum had nothing than simple outlined RAR chair print in the shop for years (look at December 2011 sales of Yumalum, or later months like Jan or Feb), looking nowhere close to Jan´s work. You only embarrassing yourself by sharing such posts. Face the truth finally. Without Handz there would not be any yumalums print looking similar. And thanx to him still more and more people copy original artists works as they now think that it is “common”.

Thank you ‘Wakeup’ for letting me know the truth. Jan must be so happy to have you on his side. It is interesting to do a little research.

For instance, Maria Holmer-Dalgren did this fab London poster back in July 2010: http://is.gd/cPNBXA that looks amazingly like this one from the Handz shop: http://is.gd/jLnloO That Star Wars poster was sold on January 2011. It sure looks heavily ‘inspired-by’ to my untrained eye. The Handz ‘You Make Me Happy Poster’ looks a lot like the ‘Another Day’ poster from Yumalum, sold six months before. Oh, and by the way, Yumalum’s quality is so much higher. You can actually see it just by looking at the two prints.

I totally understand the idea of inspiration. But borrowing designs and then arrogantly pretending to be original is another thing. ‘Wakeup’ you might also want to tell your friend Jan not to be so arrogant on the Etsy thread. Like this wonderful statement:

“One thing for sure is etsys hidious plan to give same random exposure to everybody – even to shops doing this as hobby, is this fair? really? we work like mad whole days to get sales but then we cant be even found on site no matter how much we try (and I assure you – I do a LOT ) but some shops (who in the end sell 1 item a month) are everywhere.”

I’m so glad the community called Jan out for being so sweet.

I really do not understand how you can compare Star Wars poster with City print, even close in style it is totally different piece of art. if you want to search, look at Etsy and you will find shop doing city prints in this exact style. Even it may look similar it is not a ripoff.

Another day is similar to “Gray” print? Are you serious? It looks nothing like that, another day is simple overlay colored letters that is all in common, “Gray” print is looking like a letterpress print, the style itself of course is not original, it does not pretend to be, it should look like vintage letterpress typography.

You really need to realize some facts.

        1) there never been any Cathrineholm, Stig Lindberg or similar print done in a pop-art style with use of funny / inspirational quote before ReStyle did it, Fact.

        2) Jan´s work became instant worldwide success as this ORIGINAL never before done idea – targeted on collectors and lovers of those vintage designs, was noticed by all major design sites and then published. This of course instantly get awareness of copycats and idea thieves like yumalum and others – who started to do almost same prints, trying to steal the credit for the original idea.

This is how things are, and it is really stupid to pretend it is not. Yumalum´s work before “ReStyle” consisted only from Eames RAR print in a simple outline version and in huge variety of colors and few additional prints having nothing in common with what he do now.

What is arrogant about this statement? Business is business there is nothing “fair” you must spend money and work hard to grow. Or would you like if a new blog opened today will replace you in all google searches just because it would be “fair” to grant newbies some attention? I believe you also work hard to get a good google rank and get seen by potential readers and you would not like if this would happen.

Jan, why not just use your real name instead of a pseudonym? I’ve followed your rants on Etsy for some time now. You make the mistake that quite a few people make in the creative community: quantity sold doesn’t equal quality. And it surely doesn’t indicate that the person is civil or authentic.

Before you start throwing stones about authenticity, let me share a few more examples of art work that sure seems to be lifted by others and added to your shop:

Came first: http://is.gd/V1PGJx Then yours: http://is.gd/0kaOjI
          Came first:http://is.gd/KD8NyR Then yours: http://is.gd/YIjN9x

And as far as Yumalum copying you, I did some research on that too. Here’s what I found out: their Polaroid, Make Tea Not War, Coffee O’clock and Cassette print came before yours did. Oh and that Eames RAR print? Yep, you copied that too.

I’m not going to engage with you anymore and will probably just delete your dribble, just because, well, I AM THE LAB. Let me close by saying this: I’ve been connecting and collaborating with the handmade community long before you started your shop. I know that many like your work, and good for you there. However, you nasty attitude is notorious and will become more evident. I’ve hear from MULTIPLE artists about your tactics and you are part of the reason I started the Design Respect initiative. Get some.
