Have you seen these fab baubles from Urban Aviary by Samantha Bird? From her perch in Wilmington, Delaware, Samantha is designing and making beautiful handmade pieces from ethical and eco-friendly sources. This socially conscious artisans donates 10% of her proceeds to various charities and really cares about what she does. This has lead her to support the use of conflict-free diamonds.
Samantha’s collection bears the hallmarks of a truly talented handmaker: organic and imperfect stones that have been handled in such a way as to preserve their natural beauty. It is this uncomplicated approach that makes this collection a worthy one to add to yours. Here are a few pieces that I really loved. All these shades of blue and gray are making me smile.
Samantha has been featured on the Big Cartel, Fab.com and she has a nice Q & A on her Tumblr blog. Really great Q & A, I must say. Here’s one of my favorite quotes. When discussing her ordering and shipping process, Samantha said this:
My process is a long one because I am not a large corporation paying workers minimum wage to strip their fingers to the bone to make things in bulk and have it ready to send upon order. No, instead I am a humble house wife with a studio and a website.
Wow, is that well-said or what? She’s done something that I really think should be the goal for every artist on Etsy: she made the jump to Big Cartel. Here’s another great quote about that:
Big Cartel was my first jump away from Etsy. I am actually a web and graphic designer, and I chose to not make my own online store because I loved how simple Big Cartel was for me to use. Instead of spending over a week on building it myself, coding, and dealing with apps and widgets and similar frustrating things, I had more time to focus on business and making beautiful and interesting jewelry.
