LAB News:

Last year, we saw the emergence of new technologies that are changing the way we view and make handmade. Our view is that we should embrace and celebrate these new innovations, as they are introducing us to new ways to make and to new voices in the handmade community.

Today I want to introduce you to the Endswell Collection, produced and designed by San Francisco-based Andrew Deming and Rachel Gant of Yield Design. (We’ll take a look at Yield Design’s handmade collection later on the LAB.) Using 3D technology, Andrew and Rachel have produces an absolutely stunning collection of handmade jewelry.

It appears that this talented duo agrees with my view of technology. Under the subheading of Technology Doesn’t Exist in a Vacuum, they state:

We are neither designing for technology or taking a stand against technology. We believe the new tools at our disposal further empower us to create and communicate but are not an end unto themselves.

Well said. About the collection: each piece in the Endswell Collection is cast in solid gold (rose, yellow or white) from 3D prints and then hand polished to an illustrious shine. The designs are decidedly modern and showcase a clear understanding of the relationship between form and function. It helps that Rachel has a background that includes industrial design and architecture and Andrew has sharpened his design experience by working Yves Béhar’s at groundbreaking fuseproject.

It’s always been my opinion that the real skill for makers like Rachel and Andrew is the ability to distill their collective knowledge down into a precise and cohesive collection. All you have to do is look at these incredible pieces to know that they’ve succeeded.

I’m imagining that we should expect the unexpected from the Endswell Collection. This quote portends great things to come:

The process of creating each product is a distinct journey and we learn an incredible amount each time we take something from concept to completion. The constant thread throughout our work is that each product is a marriage of technology and hand craft.

I look forward to seeing what this marriage of technology and hand craft produces in the near future. In the meantime, enjoy the images and click on any of them to see the entire Endswell Collection.
