The Essentials: Handmade Ceramics – Winter 2015

2015 will go down as the year where handmade ceramics and concrete dominated the scene. There are so many great makers out there who are designing modern handmade ceramics for just about every conceivable taste. From the rustic, like Melissa Weiss, to the modern goods of Yulia Tskerman, there really isn’t a good reason to purchase factory made ceramics. I’m also including two concrete artisans in the mix, OpusConcrete and Intoconcrete. There has also been a huge interest in using concrete for home goods and the two I’ve selected are über-talented.

The Essentials you see below are just a taste of what each maker has to offer. Be sure to visit their shops to see their entire handmade ceramics collection. I’d love to hear from you: what collection resonated with you in 2015?

About the collection:

Column one, from top to bottom:

  • 6″ Concrete Planter by OpusConcreteAdd stylish design to your garden or kitchen with this versatile handmade concrete container.  We have retained the organic quality of the raw material and cast each piece with traditional methods creating unique character and variation throughout.  Every piece is treated with a series of coatings for interior or exterior use and will gain a gentle patina with age.  All sizes are nominal and there will be subtle variation that is inherent with handmade products.
  • Geometric Teapot by VJEMPorcelain set´s geometry refers to Czech cubism and also takes the inspiration from other fields. The principle of cubism was based on the crystal – a geometrically complex structure composed of inclined surfaces and sharp edges.
  • Blue Stripe Vase by Rabbit and DragonThis is a one of a kind hand-built porcelain vase. Each is handmade into an organic, modern geometric style with a glossy bright white glaze finish. It’s beautiful decor for the room.
  • White Shino Coffee Pot by Melissa Weiss CeramicsServe your coffee and tea with care with this lidded pot. The pour spout does not have a strainer. All of the pots are made from a specially formulated custom clay recipe consisting of 25% iron rich, hand dug clay from the Arkansas Ozarks.
  • Gray Geometric Vase by Free FoldingGray Ceramic vase, or a Gray Planter, made of purple gray glazed ceramic with a delicate square Geometric pattern. This gray ceramic vase is perfect for presenting you garden flowers, or fresh picked herbs in your kitchen. A great vase for your studio or office stationary. Made of folded stoneware sheets stamped with dotted pattern. Dipped in purple gray matte glaze, burned to high temperature.

Column two, from top to bottom:

  • Seesaw Medium Bowl by IntoconcreteAdd a chic touch of whimsy to your home with the Seesaw Medium bowl. This playful vessel features a unique angled lip that allows the treasures contained to peek out. It’s distinctive finish strikes in its simple, timeless elegance.
  • Small Ceramic Planter H:2 by Yulia TsukermanHandmade and hand painted ceramic planter glazed with transparent glaze. Dimensions: 2 inch (5.5 cm) height. Microwave and dishwasher safe, although a gentle hand wash would be more appropriate.
  • Poligon Mug by Studio LorierPorcelain tableware at a low resolution. Instead of smooth shapes, this pottery is build up out of polygons. Every product is unique and handmade, so it will be a great eye-catcher in a modern interior. It has a very surprising shape, and holds firmly. Made in high quality glazed porcelain, for a long lifetime at a daily use. The color on the exterior is high gloss white to emphasize the polygons. Combined with the bright inside colors, this will result in great contrast. Choice of various colors, to combine your own colorful set: Deep Red, Emerald Green, Cobalt Blue and Bright Orange.
  • Tiny Ceramic Bowls by Soul Vessels DesignsThese tiny Deep Blue and Turquoise bowls are handmade on the pottery wheel with a chocolatey reddish-brown stoneware clay. They are food and liquid safe, can be used in the microwave and dishwasher.
