Inaluxe is a small independent design studio based out of Grampians, Australia. They, as in Kristina Sostarko and Jason Odd, create some of my favorite artwork. It’s the kind of work that sticks with you so that, month after you see their collection, you remember the way their designs make you feel. Whimsical and bold, it’s art the way it’s supposed to be: moving and fun at the same time. They have a great blog, too.

Check out this gorgeous collection from Kjær Schmeling. This Danish company, started by a nurse-turned-artist Kristine, specializes in crafting beautiful handmade leather bags and accessories. As you check out each piece, you’ll notice the attention to detail throughout the collection. Linen thread and brash finishes are featured throughout, giving the. They’re gorgeous aren’t they? Handmade, recycled and fantastic? Who says you can’t have it all? Here are 10 great picks for a modern space.

  1. I can’t say enough about Aimée Wilder’s great wallpaper. Even in a small space, this graphic print would make a perfect feature wall. Don’t forget to use our exclusive discount, found in the SHOP.

  2. In my dream space, I would have a few of these Planalto ottomans from Velvet Bean all over the place.

  3. A nice set of hand-blocked dish towels from Patch would look great in a modern kitchen. Affordable and unique, these are an easy choice.

  4. The first time I saw this vintage chair in the Winter’s Moon shop, it became my obsession. It has great lines and I love the color.

  5. Heather Lins uses simple graphics to make great things. These linen napkins would look amazing on any table.

  6. You have to take a look at the work of Kal Barteski. The skill it takes to draw line art without lifting the pen is amazing. This one is a must-have & it’s on sale.

  7. What’s a modern space without modern art? Ana Montiel’s collection of stunning prints should do the trick.

  8. Bae Home & Design offers these great lights in 3 different designs. The size and the shape would make these a great choice for a small space.

  9. I think this is one of my favorite finds. I know it’s a simple dustpan and brush from Turner and Harper, but it looks so good. I love it when utilitarian and great design come together.

  10. One more item from Winter’s Moon: a really nice bench. It’s vintage and has a great print. I love it!

El Rincon de la Pulga is an Etsy shop filled with the one-of-a-kind handiwork of Pilar Segura Rey. Each bag is handmade in Barcelona, Spain from a very unique selection of graphic fabrics. I especially love the New York gym bag. What do you think?

Check out the goods from Oliver Apt. They are a design collective and they make great things. This talented trio, Landon Schedler, Larry Kwok & Devin Hobbins, have produced a collection that is clean, modern and utilitarian.

A few years ago it came to my attention that wallpaper, the often maligned design element that plagues previous decades, was back. I decided to do a little research of my own. Now, I know what my designer comrades are saying, “Brett, you were so late to the table”. Hey, I was getting dressed! Donning my old before-it-was-owned-and-destroyed-by-the-Gap Banana Republic gear, I set off on a perilous journey through the dense interwebs. Peering out from the dense forest of design blogs, I discovered Aimée Wilder’s graphic fabulousness.

If you are still afraid to venture into the world of the paper for wall, Aimee will convert you. With bold and playful designs, she can make a feature wall stand out like Angelina’s crazy leg.  could go on & on about Aimée Wilder’s fantastic wallpaper. Instead I’ll just let you drool over the pictures. Be sure to check out one more detail at the end of this post. You can thank me later. Love you too! Stop it! I’m blushing!

OK, first off, make sure to follow Aimée on Twitter and please tell her you saw her here. Second, fall in love with her blog. Third, Aimée has offered us an exclusive discount over in the SHOP. Aimée has extended the discount for one more month. Use it & love it.

In my quest to bring you the best of the handmade and the sustainable, I am often struck with awe at the amazing array of talent I find. Take James Minola and Chelsea Green’s Grain for instance. A design collective currently located in Bainbridge Island, WA, Grain offers a collection of innovative and colorful artifacts designed with an ingenious modern flair. If you are looking for items that draw you in and refuse to let go, you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s start with the Chi-Chi necklaces. Handmade by artisans in Guatemala, they are named after the colorful Chichicastenango Market, located northwest of Guatemala City. Inspired by the shape and construction of skeins of thread used for ikat tie-dying, they are just stunning.

I love these mirrors. The oval Hung mirror is perfect for a small space at 30″ x 16″. James past experience as a boat builder in Maine shows through with that sturdy manila rope. Want a little color? Check out the Bound mirrors. So simple and yet so creative.

The Café America chair is so crazy-cool!  Inspired by chain-link fencing, this chair made from upcycled chain-link is shipped flat-packed and is said to be a pretty comfy seat. Grain achieves a unique cushioning effect by the lightly tensioned chain-link seat and back. Pretty brilliant, right?

Finding a good shower curtain has always been a struggle for me. I have some chemical sensitivities and most shower curtains smell like they were dipped in a vat of toxic goo. Next move, I will definitely be getting one of these. Made of easy-to-recylce PVC free #2 plastic, the Ty DIY shower curtain will not off-gas in your home. It also breathes, which means it won’t grow mold or mildew.  But that’s not the best reason to get one. How many shower curtains let you design them the way you want to?

Last but not least, this has got to be the most innovative item that Grain makes. It’s simply called Spool, but there is nothing simple about the idea behind it. Using recycled cardboard from the LA apparel industry, each spool features random graphic patterns that indicates which type of fiber they once held. You can configure Spool any way you want. Each kit comes with 240 spools and 520 connectors. The possibilities are endless.

You can follow Grain on Facebook and on their Blog.
