You are a one person tour de force, spinning, working and turning out the handmade goodness. On top of that, you have the rest of your life to manage. How in the world do you do it all and not lose you? It seems that a lot of us, myself included, are ‘juggling bunnies’ as I like to call it. There are so many things going on in our lives that it can be a challenge to find time to take care of ourselves. Well, you do know why they ask parents on an aircraft to put their oxygen mask on first, right? We can’t help anyone without a little self-care. When was the last time you sat down to evaluate your self-care or self-maintenance program?

Now, I know what you might be thinking: who’s got time for that? OK, see the above illustration about the oxygen mask. Truth is this: if we don’t take care of ourselves, we are incapable of effectively caring for others. When we understand our own needs, it builds empathy. We begin to see others with more patience and understanding. Self-care also recharges our creative batteries and helps fuel inspiration.

With that said, here are a few simple tips to add to your daily routine that can help you to take care of a vital part of your handmade existence: YOU.

  1. Eat: I am so guilty of this. I get up pretty early to start my craziness, so sometimes the Great Jug of Green Juice doesn’t hit the lips for a few hours. I hate it when I look at the clock and it’s 9:00 am, I’ve been up for 3 or 4 hours and the stomach is grumbling like a pack of angry wolf hounds. It is imperative that we feed the body. Set a routine in the morning that includes a nourishing breakfast, whatever that looks like for you. When we fuel our bodies, we fuel the mind. It’s a must.
  2. Move: One great suggestion I’ve received recently is to get up from the computer, at least three times an hour, and go outside. Find a point in the distance and focus on it for 20 seconds or so. This gives the eyes a break from the artificial glare of the computer. Also the fresh air will do you a world of good.
  3. Laugh: No matter what’s happening, no matter how crazy the world is, find a reason, at least once a day, for a good and hearty laugh. Did you know that laughter can reduce certain stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline? Yeah, you need it.

That’s just a few suggestions that work for me. For this LAB Assignment, tell us what you do to take care of YOU. I would love to hear your suggestions. Also, if you are juicing, do you have any fresh juice recipes? Please share your favorites below.

  1. I make sure I build in going to the gym and/or going for a walk part of my weekly routine. Even if I am extremely busy, I always make sure to get exercise at least 2-3 times a week. I also really like the tip about looking at something else for 20 seconds, I feel like I spend way too much time staring at a computer some days!

  2. Water + Sleep! I make a point of drinking at least 10 glasses a day and sleeping 8 hours a night. I know for many it sounds luxurious but I am a hot mess when I am dehydrated and tired. A couple times a year I will go do something truly luxurious like have a facial or a massage. Take care of your body + it will take care of you!

  3. I make sure that I go to the doctor when I’m starting to feel sick. As a cancer survivor, my health is paramount so I try to nip bugs in the bud. I also try to drink lots of water in a day.

  4. I do not have a problem of getting up from a computer, there is always something to do outside and check on my critters. And these days it is all about planting the garden! I have a hard time going back to the the computer:)

  5. I start the day with a big ole nutrition packed smoothie and a long walk with the dogs before I get to work in the studio. Through the day I stand up, stretch, make sure I stop for lunch, and snack. :)
