When Mary Claire White approached me about a feature on IAMTHELAB, I took one look at her Falling Into Place handmade candle collection and said, ‘”of course!” Then I realized that she has a Falling Into Place brick and mortar shop in Memphis, where she produces those same handmade candles, and realized that I had struck gold.
A friend of the uber-talented Beth Winterburn, Mary has created a collection of handmade candles that is not only affordable, but also boasts scents like Mandarin Sunrise and Sweet Wilderness, which sounds like somewhere I want to get lost in. Take a look at this lovely collection and get better acquainted with this talented shop owner and maker in the interview below.
Describe your creative process. Where do you start?
I draw inspiration from everything around me. When I have a tiny idea that intrigues me, I explore it and, if it has legs, I run with it!!
How do you maintain your creative drive?
My store is a constant source of inspiration. My customers are such wonderful and interesting people! I enjoy talking with them and get inspired by them constantly!
About the maker:
Mary Claire White opened Falling Into Place in July 2015. Located in the burgeoning Broad Avenue Arts District, the home and lifestyle boutique features work by independent designers, makers and artists from Memphis and around the country.
Mary Claire, a native Memphian, first dreamed of owning a boutique when she was 13. Her plan for the store was to create a place where people could not only shop, but have an experience they would remember and want to share.
As a candle maker, she understands the hard work that goes into handmade products and art. She takes great care in selecting the finest goods that are high in quality and design focused. In her store you will find handcrafted jewelry, baby gifts, ceramics, apothecary, botanicals, original art, leather goods, blankets, accessories and hand-crafted global products with an unforgettable mission.
But Falling Into Place is more than just a retail shop. Mary Claire offers monthly candle making workshops and has recently added a variety of classes taught by other local makers. She has also created an event space in the backyard for hosting workshops, art shows, parties and more.
Falling Into Place is here to help you discover something that you might not happen upon anywhere else. It’s a place to delight in and be enchanted by. We hope to see you soon.
How do you use social media and blogging to promote your work?
I love good photos. I have an amazing photographer that I use for all of my candle pictures. I have ideas and then she works her magic!
What are you working on right now?
I am finishing a collaboration with an artist in New Orleans, Liz Cooke owner of Lionheart Prints. She has a new line of cards and prints featuring astrological signs and wanted to use her artwork to inspire a new candle line. It is going to be amazing!
