Modern Handmade Jewelry from Maddalena Bearzi

What makes a collection of modern handmade jewelry really stand out from the crowd? I would probably narrow the answer down to 3 elements: originality, scale and variety. In this regard, Maddalena Bearzi excels. Her expansive collection is a stunning testimony to the incredible diversity that exists in this genre.

The collection features one-of-a-kind pieces that blend organic shapes with a refined touch of elegance, almost as if they were discovered fully formed from the earth itself. I wanted to check in with Maddalena to get a fresh look at her creative process as well as to discuss the role her scientific background plays in her work. See a curated collection of her work in our shop.

Your creative output is quite impressive. How do you stay inspired?
All my pieces are inspired by the natural world and I find sources of creativity everywhere around me. I don’t need to go hiking or be out at sea with large whales to let my imagination go wild. I can just walk my dog near my home in Los Angeles and find inspiration in a piece of bark coming off a tree, a dead leaf on the ground or a lizard “sunbathing” on a rock.

My deep respect for the wilderness, my curiosity about all kinds of “earthy” things, and a tangible interest for the discovery of different textures and materials, brought me to the world of jewelry-making.

Your background as a scientist plays a huge role in your creative process. How do you bring the two together?
Studying animals has been my passion since I was a child and I followed my dreams and became a marine biologist and a conservation advocate for whales and dolphins]. I’ve always felt the need, though, to express my love for nature in other ways. I don’t believe that you are restricted to follow just one path in life. My creativity found expression, first in drawings, and later on, in writing and photography. My sketches, articles, photos and books have always been connected to science and nature themes.

My deep respect for the wilderness, my curiosity about all kinds of “earthy” things, and a tangible interest for the discovery of different textures and materials, brought me to the world of jewelry-making. I began making pieces for friends by joining sustainable textiles with unique elements such as reclaimed metals, vintage charms and stones found in different parts of the world. Textile-based creations led me to a focus on one of a kind, organic metal jewelry handmade in silver, bronze, gold and brass, at times with touches of precious or semi-precious stones. Every jewelry piece that I make is connected to nature and my life as a scientist.

What is your process? Where do you begin?
It varies all the time. I observe something in nature and I go back to my studio with the urge to begin a new piece inspired by what I just observed. Sometimes, I remember a particular natural shape and form from my journeys or my research in the wild. It can be a wave, a small creature of the sand, a blade of grass or a blue whale diving in the open ocean. Or sometimes I just dream about a totally weird jewelry piece resembling an animal form. When that happens, I need to immediately draw my idea on a piece of paper. Then, there are instances where the material itself speaks to me. I start working with a silver ingot and, somehow, I see the figure of a jellyfish taking life…

Avoiding mass-produced “stuff” and buying local means making an informed decision and an ethical choice. You know that you are probably going to spend more money (and perhaps more time) but you will get something special, different, of better quality and, above all, you will support a maker in your community and even help the environment. I know that I am biased, but it’s totally worth it.

What future goals have you set for yourself as a jewelry designer?
I want to expand my knowledge of metalsmithing, learn different techniques, work with unusual materials and mix-media, explore new methods of jewelry making. There is still so much to learn.

What emotions do you want your collection to evoke?
Emotions are personal and I don’t want to set any restriction on people. Provoking any emotion makes a successful art creation…

Why should consumers support modern makers?
Avoiding mass-produced “stuff” and buying local means making an informed decision and an ethical choice. You know that you are probably going to spend more money (and perhaps more time) but you will get something special, different, of better quality and, above all, you will support a maker in your community and even help the environment.
