Earlier this year, we took off for a month-long journey across Europe. With stops in London, Barcelona, Milan, Florence and Paris, there were so many great modern handmade discoveries and I’ve been meaning to share some of them with IAMTHELAB readers. So, here you go! Our first post features one of the shops that we discovered at the end of our trip, London’s Sigmar.

The ever-so-helpful Andreas at Sigmar in London’s Chelsea Neighborhood

I have to say, Airbnb really was instrumental in helping me discover Sigmar. We discovered that many of our favorite rentals put us right smack in the middle of some of the best neighborhoods in Europe. In London, we stayed at a cool spot in Chelsea, right down the street from where Sigmar is located. We walked by the shop right after we arrived and it was closed, so we made a point to visit the next day and I’m so glad we did.

We met Andrea Colapinto, one of Sigmar’s sales associates, and he was extremely helpful. Andrea shared with us the history of this unique shop and highlighted some of the designers, both modern and vintage, that he thought I might enjoy. Folks, this shop has so many great finds in it! From great modern handmade ceramics, to a carefully selected group of vintage furniture and lighting, this small shop is packed with discoveries and totally worth the visit. Here are a few of the treasures I discovered.

About Sigmar: Founded in 2005 by Ebba Thott and Nina Hertig , Sigmar is a multidisciplinary company providing full service interior design as well as an established shop specializing in 20th century design and distribution for small niche manufacturers. Unifying it is a love and knowledge of craft and design.

It’s should come as no surprise that the KH Würtz’s ceramics would be on the top of my life, knowing how much of a fan I am of modern handmade ceramics. Sigmar showcases a huge selection of this storied Scandinavian design houses works. Sigmar carries both an ample collection of the earthy white glazed pieces and a healthy supply of the black glazed items, which are a new favorite of mine. I want an entire cabinet full of these! This father and son team surely have made a name for themselves, supplying custom ceramics to renowned restaurants, most notably the world famous NOMA. Gratefully, you can build your own collection, thanks to Sigmar. FYI: they’er available for sale on their website and at 1stDibs as well.

One other find that I have to mention are the Carl Auböck pieces. Andreas enlightened me regarding this celebrated designer who’s proliferate career produced thousands of original objects and furnishings. I mean seriously, who wouldn’t want this incredible table in their life? I should mention that the Sigmar website is a great way to learn the history behind these designs. For instance, check out this Carl Auböck cork stopper and click on his name in the product description. A very concise biography appears. Informative and innovative? Yes!
