This is probably the coolest handmade device that I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve spent a few hours perusing through Brooklyn-based Richard Clarkson’s incredible portfolio and I’m simply amazed by the endless amount of creativity he has.
I remember discovering Richard’s work via the video of his Diptable Project. (video at the end of the post) I should have guessed that there was more ingeniousness to come. The masterpiece below is called Cloud and it’s the most innovative lighting system that I’ve ever discovered in my handmade hunting. A handmade piece like Cloud would usually be visible only as part of an installation at a museum like MOMA. It’s really great that Richard has made this available for purchase on Etsy. Cloud is a fully interactive, motion-sensitive light piece. It functions as lighting and thunder show and a “music-activated visualizer and suspended speaker unit”. It’s like a fancy nightlight for grow folks.
Cloud is controlled by an Arduino system, an open-sourced electronic prototyping system, specifically designed for artists and designers. This is what happens when art and technology mix very well. Kinda mind-blowing, isn’t it?
One of my favorite features of Richard’s website, blog and shop are his hand-drawn interpretations of his designs. To see a simple drawing actualized into an actual tangible creation is one of the greatest rewards of an artistic life. There is an obvious thoughtfulness to Richard’s work. For instance, Richard has designed the Cradle chair with this in mind:
It is about creating a safe, comfortable and relaxing environment in which the user can dissipate the over-stimulation of their senses. The design was heavily directed by a synthesis of research into Autism and children with Rhythmic Movement Disorder (RMD) as well as safety, sustainability, function and aesthetics.
We had a strong focus creating a solution for sufferers of RMD but the chair is not exclusively for them and will bring relaxation, comfort and calmness to anyone.
Who couldn’t use a little extra relaxation, comfort and calmness in their lives? The Cradle chair is the ultimate napping spot. Want! You can see more of Richard’s designs on his website and in his Etsy shop. Let Richard know what you think of his work on Twitter @clarkson_rich.
