HM100: The 2017 Handmade 100

IAMTHELAB.com is pleased to announce the arrival or our first annual HM100 list. The Handmade 100 represents a cross-selection of artists and makers from all over the globe who are pushing the modern handmade movement forward. Each of these artists represents the best in their field and showcase imagination and creativity worthy of exploration.

HM100: The Handmade 100 for 2017

The Criteria

The artists on the HM100 were personally selected by Brett Torrey Haynes, editor of IAMTHELAB.com, the premier site on the web for modern, handmade goods. Brett spends thousands of hours each year exploring the shops and sites of makers and has a keen understanding of both trends and the ingenuity required to create a thriving online presence. “The artists I have chosen for the HM100, both solo makers and small collaboratives, have each impressed me with their ability to, not only create stunning and imaginative bodies of work, but to also discover how to thrive in a very competitive marketplace. No amount of mass produced goods will ever replace the power and appeal of handmade goods and IAMTHELAB.com will continue to celebrate this fact in 2017.”

The Makers

The makers and artist on this year’s list cover a broad spectrum of genres and creative perspectives. There are makers like Maddalena Bearzi, an Los Angeles-based jewelry designers, who creates a continual flow of stunning nature-inspired jewelry pieces. Or Nicole Deponte of Asterfield, who has created a lasting impression with her modern remixing of vintage neckware. The list includes makers from around the globe, from Tokyo, Japan’s Raregem to Istanbul’s Poplin Homewear.

Many of the artists successfully blend modern lines with traditional crafting methods, such as the gorgeous lighting produced by Daikonic or the luxuriant trend-bending clothing designed by Yumi World. “It’s important to present a global view of the modern handmade movement”, Brett states. “It increases our connectivity and opens our eyes to the unifying force that modern design can and should be.”

The HM100 Artist of the Year

From among the 100 artists represented on this year’s list, Brett has selected one artist who has shown an impressive combination of creative insight, business savvy and dedication. This artist has been selected as the first HM100 Artist of the Year. The revealing of this talented maker and an exclusive interview with them will be revealed on February 20th, 2017.

We hope you spend the time to explore the shops and online properties of this diverse and talent field of makers. For more information and for press inquires, please contact us at brett@iamthelab.com with HM100 in the subject line.
