When I met Claire in person this summer, it became apparent to me that she is really passionate about her craft. Her handmade collection has expanded to include some new items and, as with the rest of Claire’s collection, they are outstanding.
Claire shared some interesting insights into her creative process:
1. What inspired you to began your collection?
I first started making jewelry when I was planning my wedding and struggling to find exactly what I had envisioned. As my skills developed I fell in love with copper and the way it can be textured and patinated; my current collection stemmed from there.
2. Can you name a favorite source of inspiration?
I am inspired by things that make me happy, particularly being outside in the fresh air, surrounded by nature. Each of my collections is inspired by a different aspect of the natural environment around us all.
3. What materials do you love to use?
Copper! I like copper wire and sheet metal and usually put some kind of texture on it. I also like gemstones, both smooth and polished and rough, rocky and natural looking. Occasionally I’ll also use brightly coloured wire as well.
4. Do you have a dream collaborator?
No one in particular but one day I’d love to work with a clothing designer/maker, who shares my style, to develop a head-to-toe cohesive look.
5. When you need a musical muse, who do you turn the volume up for?
My music tastes vary drastically depending on my mood and what I’m doing. When I’m working I need something easy to listen to otherwise it starts to annoy me after an hour or so. Right now that’s Katie Melua and Christina Perri.
6. How do you use social media/blogging to promote your work?
I blog several days a week, sharing behind the scenes pictures and stories, other awesome jewelry designers and outfits I’ve put together. I also instagram/twitter when I’m working on something interesting so people can see it in progress.
7. Where do you see your shop/project going?
Who knows! For now I’m happy to see it grow so more people find out about my jewelry and can buy it in stores.
