View From The Desktop – I am the lab.

It’s been an interesting journey so far, this creative life. Funny turns & twists. Moments of eye-opening excitement sprinkled with days of misgivings. I have my two worlds, like most of us in the blogosphere do: my on-the-screen persona and my ‘real-life’. It’s that trippy dichotomy we live when the web is our medium. Funny thing though: there’s always a bleed. Always. You can try to keep them separate, but they do start to blend after awhile. The choice becomes whether or not to accept the blending of the two. I think this is one of the most unique challenges of using the interwebs for our creative passions. In the midst of the images, pithy antidotes and insightful asides, there’s a real person trying to stretch their wings and take to the sky in creative flights of fancy. And, at the same time, trying not let the virtual world replace the real world.

Personally, I think it’s important to keep a separation. We all are entitled to that space that lives when the mouse, the phone and the tablet drift into sleep mode and hibernation. But at the same time, there should be an acknowledgment that what I blog about, what I create as an artist, who I follow, converse with and promote, all say volumes about me. And it’s high time that I accept that fact.

So, here’s a reintroduction:

I’m Brett. I’ve been a creative person my whole entire life. I was the boy with the head in the clouds, writing poetry, novels and songs before I left elementary school. I’ve travelled, volunteered and met a lot of great people. I also have an intense passion for the arts and the artists behind it. I love the handmade community. It is diverse, rich and fascinating. Creativity is a gift, and I am grateful to be born with whatever gene or combination of genes that make one start to create. I want to help people remember why we create. And I want to help you to make the most of your opportunities to use the web and all it’s resources to spread your handmade goodness everywhere.

There will be a few changes around the LAB in the coming days. My goal is to connect with more of you, sharing my talents, creativity and experience in a more intuitive and inspiring way. I’ve got some tidying up to do around here and I hope you like the changes. Oh, and the atom up there? You’ll be seeing it all over the place pretty soon. It’s a fitting symbol of what we do as creative people: we take parts and pieces and put them together until something wonderful emerges. We show who we are by what we create. After all, I, like you, am the lab of my own experiment, the petri dish of my own experience. Together we can create great and design better. Why not introduce yourself in the comments below.

p.s. They say music is a window into the soul. I don’t know who ‘they’ are, but they’re sorta right. Here’s my first 8track. It’s great for creating. You’re welcome.

This is just beautiful Brett! I love getting to know you & seeing you stretch your wings. I remember the first few times I visited your site I couldn’t find your name ANYWHERE or a picture or any info about who you were. The fact that you are creating a space that feels safe enough for you to step out into your own awesome & build community while sharing your creativity makes my heart do double time. This is what it is all about! The public/private dichotomy is essential but should also be blurred, keep a private space for yourself but also making it possible to connect heart to heart. It is amazing the depth of relationships that come from that connection…very soon they are real life relationships further blurring those lines. Hooray for stepping out Brett, I celebrate you!
